How Solar Panels Work: A Beginner’s Guide

March 14, 2023 by Vanessa Cortez

Solar energy is an abundant and renewable source of power that can be harnessed using solar panels. Solar panels, also known as photovoltaic panels, comprise numerous solar cells that capture the sun’s energy and convert it into electricity. Solar panels can generate electricity for homes, businesses, and even large-scale power plants. In this beginner’s guide, we will closely examine how solar panels work.
The Science Behind Solar Panels

Solar panels are made of small units called solar cells, made of silicon. Silicon is a common element found in sand and used in computer chips. When sunlight hits a solar cell, it causes the electrons in the silicon atoms to become excited, creating a flow of electricity. This flow of electricity is known as a direct current (DC).

How Solar Panels Convert DC to AC

The electricity produced by solar panels is direct current (DC), which is incompatible with most home or business appliances. Instead, alternating current (AC) is needed to power most electrical devices. An inverter is required to convert the DC electricity generated by solar panels into AC electricity that can be used in our homes or businesses. The inverter takes the DC electricity from the solar panels and converts it into AC electricity that can be used in our homes or businesses.

The Role of Net Metering

Net metering is a system that allows homeowners with solar panels to send the excess electricity they generate back to the grid. This is possible because solar panels generate more electricity during the day than is typically used in the home. This excess electricity is sent back to the grid, and the homeowner is credited for the electricity they send back. When the sun goes down, and the solar panels are no longer generating electricity, homeowners can use the credits they have accumulated to offset their electricity usage from the grid.

The Efficiency of Solar Panels

The amount of sunlight measures solar panel efficiency converted into electricity. The efficiency of solar panels is dependent on several factors, including the type of solar cell, the size of the solar panel, and the weather conditions. The efficiency of solar panels has been steadily improving over the years, with some of the latest models reaching efficiency levels of over 20%.

The Cost of Solar Panels

Over the years, the cost of solar panels has significantly reduced, giving homeowners and businesses better access to them. Multiple factors, such as the size of the solar panel system, installation expenses, and the availability of incentives and rebates, influence the cost of solar panels. Numerous governments and utility companies provide incentives and rebates to promote the adoption of solar panels.

Solar panels offer a sustainable and environmentally friendly way to generate electricity for homes and businesses. These devices capture the energy from the sun through their solar cells, which convert it into electricity. The resulting electrical output is direct current (DC), which an inverter transforms into alternating current (AC) to power appliances and devices. Net metering is another feature allowing homeowners to send surplus electricity back to the grid, offsetting their energy consumption.

As solar panel technology advances, their efficiency levels continue to improve while their cost decreases, making them an increasingly affordable power source. By harnessing the sun’s energy, we can reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and contribute to a healthier environment.
