Minnesota Solar Tax Rebates and Grants

March 16, 2023 by Femi Stephen

Minnesota is one of the most progressive states regarding renewable energy and solar energy. The state has made a significant commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and promoting the use of clean, sustainable energy sources. One of the ways it has done this is by offering solar tax rebates and grants to individuals, businesses, and organizations that invest in solar energy systems.

Solar tax rebates and grants are incentives that help offset the initial cost of purchasing and installing a solar energy system. These incentives are designed to encourage more people and organizations to invest in solar energy, which will help the state reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and promote a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.

Minnesota’s solar tax rebate program is one of the most generous in the country. Under the program, homeowners and businesses can receive a rebate of up to $2,500 per kilowatt installed capacity for residential and commercial solar projects. The maximum rebate amount is $5,000 for residential and $25,000 for commercial projects.

To qualify for the rebate, a certified contractor must install the solar energy system and meet specific minimum requirements for energy efficiency and system performance. Additionally, the rebate is only available to participating utilities’ customers, including Xcel Energy, Minnesota Power, and Otter Tail Power.

In addition to the solar tax rebate program, Minnesota also offers a variety of solar grant programs to help finance solar energy projects. These grants are typically awarded to businesses and organizations investing in solar energy systems to power their operations.

Minnesota Department of Commerce’s Solar Grant Program is one of the most popular solar grant programs. This program provides grants to businesses and organizations that install solar energy systems on their properties. The grant can cover up to 60% of the total cost of the solar energy system, with a maximum grant amount of $250,000.

Another solar grant program in Minnesota is the Made in Minnesota Solar Incentive Program. This program is specifically designed to support the development and installation of solar energy systems manufactured in Minnesota. Under the program, manufacturers can apply for grants of up to $250,000 to support the development and production of solar energy systems.

Overall, Minnesota’s solar tax rebate and grant programs are among the most generous and comprehensive in the country. These incentives have helped to drive significant growth in the state’s solar energy industry, with more and more businesses and organizations investing in solar energy systems to power their operations. Minnesota is helping to lead the way toward a more sustainable energy future by promoting clean, renewable energy sources.
